Aims and objectives
To create an informative DVD which would:
- enable the Public Partnership Forum to link better with the more remote communities of East Ayrshire
- increase understanding about how communities can engage with NHS Ayrshire & Arran through the Public Partnership Forum
- engage more effectively with marginalised and vulnerable groups
- promote East Ayrshire Public Partnership Forum and add value to the systems that we currently have in place
- further our work with young people.
What we did
A coordinator from yipworld.com (a local drop-in centre for young people, with whom we built a good relationship over the past two years) contacted the Public Partnership Forum Co-ordinator with an idea for a project that would involve young people over the winter months when they attended yipworld.com sessions.

It was agreed to make a promotional DVD to answer the public’s questions about PPFs and how they can get involved in the health service. The script for the DVD was written by the PPF Coordinator.

Twelve young people from the drop zone, aged 10 to 11 years, volunteered to take part and yipworld.com supplied a young volunteer who had drama qualifications to assist at the twice-weekly sessions. Regular meetings were held to discuss progress.

Funding was secured from the health board to produce the DVD, which was launched at an event chaired by the NHS Board’s Chief Executive. There were 69 people present including families, NHS leads of service and East Ayrshire Provost.
Training undertaken
The young people were taught basic drama skills so that they would be more confident acting for the DVD, and to enable them to be fully involved in the project.
Evaluation
Evaluation will be ongoing. We will measure the success of the DVD by keeping records of enquiries coming from areas where the DVD has been shown.

The young people involved, their friends and families have gained an understanding of the Public Partnership Forum and how they can engage with the health board. The young volunteer has used her experience in the project to secure funding to set up her own drama classes. Participants have successfully requested an ongoing programme of drama classes at yipworld.com.

The Chief Executive of NHS Ayrshire & Arran, Dr. Wai-Yin Hatton, launched the DVD in July 2010. All who attended the launch event received it very well, including East Ayrshire Provost Councillor Stephanie Young.
Plans for the future
The DVD will be played on a loop on screens in GP surgeries, Health Centres and shopping malls throughout Ayrshire & Arran. We also plan to show it in East Ayrshire schools, local authority buildings and our new Council Chambers.

We hope to post link to the film from the NHS Ayrshire & Arran website and the Community Planning pages of the East Ayrshire local authority website.

Yipworld.com plans to show the DVD to groups that use their building including a young men’s single parents group.
